Are You Storm Ready?

After recent Nor'easters it is a good idea to always be prepared for unpredictable weather and storms. Be ready to go! In the event of another Nor'easter, severe rain or snow storm or hurricane, having proper items to handle various situations can help you and your family get through the storm safely. Protect your home, business, and health with these precautionary steps:

1. Have a safety kit on-hand at all times.

Create your own disaster preparedness kits - one for at home and one to take on the go. Your kits should have enough supplies to last for each person in your home for three days. Your supplies should include:

  • Water - At least one gallon per person per day is recommended.
  • Food - Non-perishable items such as canned food, energy bars, and other items that don't require refrigeration or preparation are best.
  • First-Aid Kit
  • Medications - Have enough prescription medication to last a week. Include Benadryl and Ibuprofen in your kit.
  • Crank radio & Flashlights - Include extra batteries for these items.
  • Clothing - Have sturdy clothing that is suit for cold weather and rain. Have protective gloves and shoes for everyone.
  • Personal Items - Remember to include extra glasses or contact lenses and other personal hygiene items. You can also add personal comfort items such as games or books.
  • Money - Have cash on hand. If you lose power ATM's and Credit Cards won't work.
  • Important Documents - Make sure all of your important documents are stored in waterproof, portable containers.

2. Make a Plan

Talk about a Family Disaster Plan ahead of time. Make sure everyone knows where to go or who to contact in the event of an emergency.

  • Plan ahead - Make sure everyone knows what to do in case they become separated.
  • Contact Family - Have a list of contact numbers so that you can reach other family members and friends to make sure they are okay or to ask for help.

 3. Be Informed

The more you know before and during a storm, the better off you are.

  • Listen to local officials and news reports - If officials tell you to evacuate or stay in, follow this guidance.
  • Know evacuation routes to take if needed - have an alternative route planned, too.
  • Do not return home until it is said to be safe.

Be prepared and stay calm. Make sure that your safety kits are accessible and stocked at all time.
