The violence that occurs in neighborhoods & communities has found its way inside the halls. Officials and managers must do more to prevent violence and its preventable aftermath. Effective facilities take special care in training their entire staff on understanding and identifying warning signs for violent behavior.

Identifying Early Warning Signs of Violence 

  • Understand violence & aggression within its context. These are expressions of emotions that may exist within the school or home environment only.
  • Avoid stereotypes - Be aware of false indications of violence including race, socio-economic status, academic ability or physical appearance.
  • View warning signs within a developmental context. Children at different levels of development have varying social and emotional capabilities. This can cause actions to be misinterpreted.
  • Most children who are troubled exhibit more than one warning sign repeatedly, and for an increasing intensity over time

Indications of Violence

The following signs could indicate that children require professional assistance:

  • Social withdrawal
  • Excessive feeling of isolation & being alone
  • Feelings of rejection
  • Being a victim of violence
  • Low school interest and poor academic performance
  • Expression of violence in writings or drawings
  • Uncontrolled anger
  • Patterns of impulsive hitting
  • History of disciplinary issues

Safety Plan

Create a violence prevention and response plan in the case that you have to handle a situation including:

  • Description of early warning signs and procedures for identifying them
  • Descriptive and effective prevention practices 
  • Description of intervention strategies
  • Compliance with federal, state and local laws
  • Training & support initiatives
